pdf Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force Strategic Plan (2013 – 2017)
By:

Aquatic nuisance species (ANS) are nonindigenous species that threaten the diversity or abundance of native species, the ecological stability of infested waters, and/or any commercial, agricultural, aquacultural, or recreational activities dependent on such waters.

What is White Nose Syndrome in Bats and Why Does it Matter?

“White-nose Syndrome (WNS) is a devastating disease of hibernating bats that has caused the most precipitous decline of North American wildlife in recorded history. Since it was first discovered in 2006, WNS has infected six species of insect-eating bats in the northeastern and southern U.S., causing declines approaching 100% in some populations; estimated losses have exceeded 5.5 million bats from 2006 to 2012.

The implications for US agriculture and silviculture are potentially severe.

Maine Invasive Plants - Autumn Olive / Russian Olive

In New England, autumn olive has escaped from cultivation and is progressively invading natural areas. It is a particular threat to open and semiopen areas. Russian olive may also escape from cultivation, but so far is less common. Both autumn olive and Russian olive tolerate poor soil conditions and may alter the processes of natural succession.

Maine Invasive Plants - Asiatic Bittersweet

Asiatic bittersweet poses a serious threat to other species and to whole habitats due to its aggressive habit of twining around and growing over other vegetation. This plant has a high reproductive rate, long-range dispersal mechanisms, and the ability to root-sucker. The vines can strangle tree and shrub stems. All types of plants, even entire plant communities, can be over-topped and shaded out by the vine’s rapid growth. Nearly pure stands of this vine are sometimes found in affected areas.

Maine Invasive Plants - Japanese Barberry

Japanese barberry has escaped from cultivation and is progressively invading natural areas. It is a particular threat to open and second-growth forests. An established colony can eventually grow thick enough to crowd out native understory plants.

iMapInvasives
