Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund Updated:05/2021

The Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund (MOHF) conserves wildlife and open spaces through proceeds generated from instant, scratch lottery ticket sales. The MOHFis for the sole purpose of maintaining, improving and expanding state and local natural resource conservation programs and associated compatible public uses in accordance with the strategic plan.  Proposals must meet the following Guiding Principles:

  • conserve the best of Maine's outdoor heritage and achieve outstanding natural-resource or recreational benefits;
  • maximize degree and diversity of public/private partnerships or other types of matching funds;
  • form alliances between natural resource agencies, interest groups and organizations based on shared visions and mutual responsibility;
  • address natural resource concerns of statewide significance and/or broad geographical distribution;

Grants are awarded twice a year, totaling approximately $700,000 annually. Grant application deadlines are March 1 and September 1 of each year.

The MOHF funds projects in four categories: 

  1. promote conservation of Maine's fish and wildlife habitat,
  2. acquisition and management of special places,
  3. endangered species, and
  4. conservation law enforcement.
